Prayer (A God Given Purpose)

Prayer is the opportunity God gives his children to communicate and become intimately acquainted with him.  As a conversation with God, prayer enables his children to build a personal relationship with him.

Prayer is an expression of a believer's dependence on God. The primary purpose of prayer is to seek God's will [1 John 5:14] says: And this is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. Jesus in his model prayer told his disciples to ask according to the will of God [Matthew 6:10].

Prayer provides an opportunity for adoration, praise, thanksgiving, confessions of sin and request for self and others.  Numerous format for prayers is possible in fact: Prayer is as unique as each person, but all prayer has a central purpose, the opportunity to express yourself fully and honestly to the Lord, and to listen for his reply. Prayer is not intended as a means of impressing others or manipulating God [Matthew 6:5-6], but as a way to genuinely seek God's strength and direction.

While many believers sincerely desire to spend time with God in prayer few actually do.  Spiritually discipline is necessary to make prayer a priority in our lives.  God, however, has made prayer a priority, directing his children to pray first, often, and always, therefore, prayer should become a priority for us. Scripture speaks repeatedly of the importance of prayer.

Paul says to "pray about everything" [Phillipians 4:6]. Believers should make all request know to God we are to pray regularly and frequently. David promises the Lord: evening, and morning and noon I will pray [Psalm 55:17] Even Jesus himself prayed for extended periods of time [Luke 6:12]. Certainly, when facing challenges or trials, a [believer] should pray [James 5:13].

Paul exhorted the Christian in Thessalonica to pray without ceasing [1 Thessalonica 5:17]. Prayer becomes not only an attitude of the heart but also a continual dialogue with God. When praying take the time to be still and hear a word from God [Psalm 46:10]. The Bible dictates no specific time or place for prayer, however, a child of God may find it easier to maintain the priority of prayer when they establish a definite time and place to prayer as part of their daily schedule [Luke 18:1].

Prayer should occupy a place in the home. While every believer does not need a prayer closet [Matthew 6:6], all believers should have a place of solitude free from distractions in order to pray in private.

Through prayer, God reveals his character and blessings. His promises are apparent as we pray [2 Peter 1:2-4]. God promises to hear and answer every sinner who seeks believer who asks in faith.  Jesus told his disciples that the Father would do anything asked in his name. [John 14:13-14]. To the believers, God answer at just may be unclear, or different from the answer we expected or desired, or the answer may be delayed.

God answers include "Yes", "No", and "wait", God hears and answers in the way that is best and in his own time.
